Tapping to Shift the Energy of Resistance (PR)

One feature that is built into every round of EFT is Psychological Reversal tapping, where we tap on the Karate Chop or rub the Sore Spot whilst saying the famous “Even though” statement. And I like that. Clients also like it. As soon as we start the “Even though,” it is a familiar place — a nice comfortable feeling. It is almost like a familiar comfortable pair of jeans or your favorite song. It is so comforting, we just say it automatically and healing can start.

Then there are the times when this simple PR treatment needs a boost. Maybe the SUDS (0-10 intensity) stay where they are. Or perhaps they go down by tiny increments. This is when extra skills are needed to give it a boost.

Although PR is an energy disruption, I am happier thinking of PR in NLP terms as a protective mechanism. So to me, in my experience, we are not so much correcting PR as we are allowing healing to occur. If we feel we need the problem in order to be protected in some way or other, then it is hard to let go of the problem. This protection can be at various different levels.

Protection could be the protection of our identity. For example, an anorexic may see herself as that Thin Girl and anything geared towards recovery is also destructive of her identity or the core of her being. Or protection can be for our way of life or security, where for example tapping for a better job never gets anywhere because the current job is too secure to let go of. Protection can also be of where we stand or where we belong, such as a smoker at a deep level needing to remain a smoker to be like the rest of their loving family.

Naturally, it follows that if tapping is meant to resolve most issues, we can tap for PR. This is a good first port of call. Like all tapping, it is best to be specific. For example:

Even though it does not feel safe to let go of this, I deeply love and accept myself
Or
Even though I don’t know who I’ll be when I let go of this…
Or
Even though I don’t know how to cope if I let go of this…
Or
Even though it reminds me of my family’s love to continue like this…

On the actual physical tapping level, we can rub the Sore Spot or tap the Karate Chop. And we can also tap on any point while we do the PR treatment. A round of “I accept myself” on each point can do wonders. If in doubt, try doing the PR reversal on various different points and see what feels best for you. You may be pleasantly surprised. And if one cannot accept oneself, that can be a session itself, working on raising levels of self-acceptance. In my experience, this is time well spent. I find that when clients accept themselves less that 20%, they will be very reversed towards healing. But when this reaches 50%, the client suddenly starts surging ahead.

Another PR-shifter is emphasis. You can make the Setup even more powerful by shouting out the second half, the “I DEEPLY ACCEPT MYSELF!” This is very simple to do and may be all that is needed to dislodge a little stuckness in a session. Try doing it while rubbing both Sore Spots or tapping bilaterally on both sides of the body!

Allowing healing is also allowing love. Any blocks to self-love are worthy of dedicated sessions to resolve them. Like self-acceptance, I find if a client loves themselves less that 20%, that in itself leads to a big PR element. Unconditional love is an energy that we can learn to let in. Training in allowing unconditional love into one’s being can in my experience lead to huge shifts in PR.

The 20% self-love or self-acceptance threshold is based upon my client experiences, and I would welcome comments about your experiences. We are always learning with EFT. These are very exciting times.

This reminds me of the creation of EFT at the very beginning. EFT was made out of TFT and toxins are a big thing to TFTers. Of course it is true that on the rare occasion, toxins can create PR. But with EFT, all you have to do is find the toxin and tap for it. For example, with someone I treated recently, upon muscle-testing, I found this to be peanuts. So we tapped for, “Even though I have this reaction to peanuts…” and then the session went very smoothly afterwards.

Quite honestly though, simple persistence is one way to get around PR that works. It may take longer, but something will happen. The biggest advantage is that you do not need to be a highly skilled EFTer to do it. Just tap, tap, and tap. You can get there in the end.

So, there are many ways to release PR and much has been written about it. Sometimes it can seem daunting, but if we keep it simple, there are many ways forward. One step at a time.

Suzanne, I applaud your excellent explanation of EFT’s “psychological reversal” and your helpful renaiming of it as protective mechanism.

When my clients or I have been stuck, that’s when I’ve been encouraged to be creative, or let the intuition come through and develop new methods.

I’ve also found it very helpful to tap some of what I call “resistance rounds.” That’s where we say something like, “Even though I don’t want to let this go, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway.” Even though I want to hold on to this…” Even though I’m not willing to let it go, and I don’t understand why…”

Then I tap phrases like, “I won’t let this go. You can’t make me. I’m doing this my way. I refuse to let it go.”

Giving voice to that part of us that doesn’t want to be controlled or told what to do, even though it’s par of us, can often allow the letting go to begin.

Nice work, Suzanne. Keep writing about EFT!

HiSuzanne
I’m not an EFT practioner, but I have really enjoyed your brilliant article, especially your “Even though” suggestions which have deeply resonated with me. I’ve added one of my own to work on along with your ideas which is
Even though I’m scared of where life might take me if I let go…………..
and I’ve just thought of another as I’m typing
Even though I’m scared of rejection if I let go of this and change
Fantastic and thanks again
Sue

Hi Suzanne,

What a great insights on pr. I do use EFT for quit a while now, but your explaination has helped me to get a better understanding of pr.

I really like the idea of emphasis.

Thanks,
Jan
