Spain

I am excited to share this story about tapping on a wolf – Don’t worry, it’s a pet wolf dog! Previously, I have used tapping with my own dog Lucy (physically tapping on her), and she responds really well and indeed loves tapping. My other dog doesn’t like it, so I have to use Surrogate Tapping with her.

While I have an animal energy healers practitioner certificate, I hadn’t felt the confidence to try it with other animals until I met a beautiful wolf pet named Shawnee. Her unusual name is derived from the Shoshone tribe in America.

Shawnee

It all started when I was invited around to some new neighbors who had moved in next to us with their dog and cats. It was a lovely afternoon, and we were sitting having cocktails when I saw this most beautiful creature in the doorway – Shawnee, their pet wolf. The owner told me she was very ill and didn’t think she was long for this world. She had a terrible limp and could hardly walk. Indeed, she was trailing her back leg. Two of her feline companions had recently passed away, and she was missing them dreadfully. She had laid down, head in paws and looked very sorry for herself.

I couldn’t stop looking at this beautiful animal. The owner was very interested in EFT and had never heard of it before. She asked if I would try some on Shawnee. I advised that not all dogs liked tapping physically and we may have to use Surrogate, but the owner insisted she would be OK to try out physical tapping. I must admit to some degree of trepidation when I laid flat on the floor beside her. The absolute sheer size of her was daunting – yet she had the most beautiful eyes.

“Talk As”

I asked Shawnee if she minded if I tapped on her. I told her I was sorry she felt so ill, but that tapping might just help her. I felt it was OK and the owner said it was OK to go ahead. I then proceeded to tap on the points, around the eyes, chest and under arm, similar to ourselves with the following phrases as if I was Shawnee:

I am so low
I feel pretty bad
I can’t walk properly
But I’m a good dog & my owners love me
I wish I could walk properly
Or just a bit better
I keep trailing my back leg & hobbling along
I keep limping
But I’m a good girl, such a good girl
I miss my friends so much (the two cats)
Now they have gone forever and I won’t see them again
I’m a good girl
I want to get better

At this stage, I stopped tapping as I thought she may have had enough because she was very weak. The owner walked me round their garden, looking at the plants and chatting. I have to be honest I was still drawn to Shawnee and noticed that she had staggered up from the ground and started following us around. I thought her walking looked a lot better, but I didn’t comment.

Then the owner’s husband commented about Shawnee’s walking looking much better. She was definitely improved but not knowing her, I didn’t know what her normal day was like. I was then invited to sit with the owner in her courtyard area, and Shawnee came to sit near us and laid down. I asked the owner if she wanted to try some more tapping (Surrogate Tapping this time), and she was very keen as she wanted Shawnee to get better.

“Talk About”

I tried Gwyneth Moss’ protocol and talked about the animal. I asked the owner if she would follow me tapping as she had no idea what to do. She didn’t know the points or protocol or about Surrogate Tapping.

I tapped on myself and used similar phrases as before, such as:

Shawnee is a good girl
She’s missing her life long friends Mau & Miss Piggy
They both died after moving here and she misses them dreadfully
This is when her leg problem started
She’s so ill and may not have long for this world

Something came up here, but I didn’t vocalise it to the owner just yet, about being very worried about her owner. I didn’t want to freak this lady out! Also I work very intuitively, and it felt like the right thing at this stage. All the time the owner was tapping with me. I asked her if she wanted to try, and I would lead her with the tapping, so we then used “talk to” the animal:

Shawnee, even though you are so ill and missing your friend, you are a good girl and I love you very much…

The owner repeated and then came up with her own words,

I love you Shawnee and I don’t want you to go, but it may be your time?

We continued around this theme and as the owner started to become more confident with the whole idea, she started talking to Shawnee herself. We stopped for a while and the owner thought it was really interesting. I asked if we could do a role play between us. I was Shawnee and the owner was herself:

Me as Shawnee: I am ill, so ill, I cant walk well although it was a little better maybe just now…

Owner: I am sorry you are so ill Shawnee, I love you and want you to get better.

Me: I really miss my friends so much, Mau followed me all over (again something came up from Shawnee)

I suggested very gently that the owner might ask if it was Shawnee’s time to pass. Only if she wanted to?

The owner said, “Shawnee is it your time to pass?”

There was a very long pause. I didn’t say anything, and the owner was visibly shaken.

Still quiet, I waited. The owner eventually said, “No I don’t want to die yet.”

Me, as Shawnee, repeating the phrases: “I want all the time and help I can get, I don’t want to die, it’s not my time yet, it’s not my time, I want every bit of help from anyone”

Sharing an Intuitive Feeling

The “something” came up which I had to think about but just said it in this role play format as it seemed the right moment, “There is something wrong with your mum, what is wrong? I am really worried about you. There is something seriously wrong isn’t there? I need all the time in the world but for some reason you can’t give it to me. You are worried, what is wrong?”

Again the owner looked visibly shocked and quiet and, in fact, couldn’t speak. I waited, and said we didn’t have to go any further if she didn’t want to. She was actually quite annoyed in a defensive way at first saying that she did everything for Shawnee, she was top of her list even though she recently had lost her father. We chatted a little and then it became clear why she had reacted in this way. She became upset, but said she would be OK in a couple of minutes.

She then explained that no one knew, not her best friends and only her husband, that she had to go for a scan for cancer and was very worried. She couldn’t believe how I knew..I said I didn’t know, it was Shawnee’s worry, and I also had a sense from Shawnee that she would lose her human mum as well as her friends she had recently lost.

“I Tapped Mentally For Her”

We finished tapping around this worry. I had to leave and travel to southern Spain the next day, so I haven’t seen Shawnee physically since. Interestingly, for three consecutive nights I was woken up early morning with Shawnee’s beautiful face seeking healing which I tapped mentally for her. I couldn’t get her out of my mind, so sent her Surrogate Tapping whenever I thought of her. I rang a couple of weeks later and whilst Shawnee wasn’t in the best of health, her walking had improved dramatically.

The tapping with Shawnee really has left an impression on me, I was shocked to the core at how quickly and simply “things” came up. The whole process was only about 10 minutes.

Since then, whilst she has improved, I learned recently she had 18 epileptic fits in two days. I wanted to continue tapping surrogately, so I pulled up her photo on the computer and tapped on her points on the screen. I wanted to do role play, but was on my own. A light bulb moment: Actually no I wasn’t on my own, Lucy my own dog of 9 years was with me. Why not surrogate tap with her?!

I took the lap top over with the photo of Shawnee, to where Lucy was sat & asked if she would be willing to help tap & role play as Shawnee.

I asked questions of Lucy as Shawnee for about 15 minutes and also tapped on Lucy and on myself and on Shawnee’s photo. We tapped similarly around her health and other issues and some interesting points came up:

I asked ‘how can we help you Shawnee?’

Lucy as Shawnee ‘ Water ‘
Me ‘ do you need water, do you want to swim ?’
Lucy as Shawnee ‘ Water ‘
Me ‘ I am not sure how to help with the water Shawnee but I will talk to your owners , is there anything else ?’
Lucy ‘ Yes, when I was 3 months old I was traumatized’
Me ‘ 3 months old..the trauma’

We had to stop as Lucy started barking at something outside. I followed up with an email to the owners a couple of days later & asked if Shawnee liked swimming. The owners said not really but she loved sitting in water & two days ago sat in the newly filled swimming pool. Something she loved to do. There is some follow up work to do and the owner said she didn’t dare to think that Shawnee seemed to be improving.

I want to encourage anyone to try Gwyneth’s protocol as it has encouraged me, more and more, to work with animals. My sessions were very impromptu and not necessarily in an order, I went with the flow.

On reflection, one thing I love is the way I believe we are all so connected and that if we can also use animals to surrogately tap for another animal!

jane@xpressweb.com
Kanab, Utah, US
(written on the 4th of July)

I just had quite an experience that showed the power of EFT to calm animals. I have two dogs, Shayla and Tony. I live in a small town on the Utah/Arizona border, Kanab, UT. Every fourth of July it is traditional to shoot off about 4 to 6 cherry bomb type fireworks at precisely 6 a.m. Our town is located at the mouth of several canyons and the sound echos throughout the town, the vibrations can be felt in the ground. My dogs are not particularly fond of this tradition and tend to pant, pace and hover close to me, their eating goes off and they are just really nervous.

When I fed them this morning, they showed no interest in eating their breakfast. I set the food bowls down in front of them and they just laid there. I thought then that EFT might help so I declared myself to be Shayla and began the tapping sequence.

Even though I really don’t like these big booms and they scare me really bad, I love myself and know I am a good dog…

By the time I got through the first set up, both dogs were up and eating. I continued to tap while they ate. I did two more set ups using basically the same theme:

Even though I don’t like this noise, I don’t like the way the ground vibrates when they shoot the fireworks off, etc., etc.

I focused on the noise and vibration for the first two rounds of tapping on the points and the third round was focused on feeling safe in their home and with their “mom.” By the end of the third round the dogs were licking their bowls clean and now they are peacefully asleep, near me but not pressing against me, and they are not panting or showing any signs of anxiety at all. I also found it to be very interesting that even though I declared myself to “be Shayla” it was completely effective for Tony also.

This information might be helpful to pet owners for future 4th of July’s. Pet anxiety on this holiday is high and EFT can really help, immediately. We could also use EFT to help our animals with thunderstorms or any other loud-noise stressors.

love ‘n hugs,
Jane

Follow-up: In an email later that evening, Jane gave us this report:

I am sitting here in my living room watching the fireworks out my window. Shayla is lying on the floor, asleep, a little ways away from me. Tony is laying with his body against my leg and is only slightly nervous, panting just a little. The booms can be clearly heard and I’m sure the dogs feel them. It seems the EFT we did this morning is holding just fine. How cool is that!!

She works with animals and/or people, both individually or together. Her special interest now is in helping in situations where pets are exhibiting behavioral issues which may be related to the caregiver’s own issues (i.e., the caregiver is having problems that have strong emotions attached to them, the animal is picking this up, etc.).

by Ange Finn
www.TapIntoYourself.com
Houston, Texas US

EFT is so powerful for dissolving emotional blocks and letting us do our ‘deep work’ that we may overlook its suitability as a simple relaxation technique to help us achieve peak performance.

I’d like to share a recent example, using EFT with a group of horseback riders who were preparing for a Hunter-Jumper show.

Preparation: An EFT Demo

I met with these riders in a group while they were doing a week-long riding clinic, and gave them a 15-minute introduction to EFT and how to use it. The group was all-female and included youth and adult riders of varying experience and skill levels. Some had received EFT instruction from me before, and others were new to it. A few of them were practicing to ride in a show four days later.

I asked the group for one example of a problem a rider was having in the clinic. One young rider, riding a lesson horse that can be notoriously stubborn, volunteered, “I can’t keep Blue from diving in off the rail” (meaning, trying to trot in to the center of the arena instead of following the fence around.) I asked her how she felt when that happened, and she said “Frustrated.” Excellent example, which I used to teach the group how to tap.

We tapped on “Even though I can’t keep Blue from diving in and it makes me frustrated, I’m a great rider.” Given that there were several youngsters, I chose this closing phrase rather than “I deeply and completely accept myself.” We did not use a Intensity Level (SUDS) to check this statement; I was going for a more generalized, group experience with these riders.

I had everyone check their body sensations after the round, and they each noticed some degree of relaxation.

As the class resumed, I also took a couple of the riders aside to show them how to tap while in the saddle. For horseback riders, EFT is a great modality because they can use it while mounted. (The rider’s safety comes first; the horse needs to be calm and still, the rider needs to have a hand on the reins, and there should also be a person on the ground to give a hand if the horse does become restless.)

While working, I periodically looked for Blue, the problem lesson horse, and noticed that things seemed to be going well.

After about half an hour, I checked in with Blue’s young rider for her perspective, and she reported that she was having no trouble keeping him on the rail. She also jumped him successfully as the class proceeded to practicing their jumps.

I then showed the riders two tapping points for the horses that often produce calm; different horses prefer different points. One point is on the horse’s forehead, roughly where the sworl of hair is, or what we think of the “third eye” spot; the second is on the horse’s upper lip, between the nostrils or about an inch lower (the exact spot depends on the horse, some horses will lip your fingers if you’re too close to the mouth, but will respond well to tapping higher on the nostrils .)

This was all the work I did with these riders in their clinic.

At The Show

Four days later, I attended the show to give a hand with the tapping for those who needed it. Two youth riders and two adult riders used EFT in real-time between rounds, to improve their performance. Each used it while mounted, either with me or with their trainer/instructor. The trainer and I watched the rounds, and worked with the riders on specific elements.

Results from this show:

•	Sarah, a youth rider, was nervous in her first class, and it affected her performance and her placing. She had been tapping on generally doing well, but after placing last in the first class, she and her trainer then focused the EFT technique. They narrowed it from working on “generally doing well” in the show to the elements she needed to improve. Sarah went on to win a first place in her more-difficult canter flat class, executing her skills solidly.

•	Emma, a youth rider moving up to Maiden Riders Division, wasn’t as relaxed and solid as she needed to be in her first rounds. Her horse refused a fence, and rushed a few others, due to Emma’s nervousness on the more challenging course. Her trainer zeroed in on her two-point position, (the position a rider takes when going over a fence) and told Emma that she was not getting into two-point which was affecting her jumping. Before her last class, Emma and I tapped two rounds specifically on her two-point position; in her last class, her two-point position was solid and her jumps were clean. She won Reserve Champion for the division, and the judge specifically complimented her two-point position in the last round.

•	Helen, an adult beginning rider riding in her first show, placed last in her first class, struggling with an understandable case of nerves. To add to Helen’s challenges at her first show, she is from Russia and has only been in the US a short time. Her inexperience on horseback, language barriers, and show nerves gave her a lot to overcome. Between her first and second round she used her EFT skills, conquered her nerves, and finished 3d in the most challenging class of her division, the ridden pattern equitation class.

•	The judge’s comment to the trainer/instructor on these riders: “All of your students’ rides got better as they went along.” This is significant because riders and/or horses often become tired as the show goes on. Either the rider or the horse, or both, are likely to become less organized and less focused toward the end of the day than they were at the beginning. To see a consistent pattern of improvement among a group of riders of different ages is rare, and a significant outcome.

•	The trainer commented that EFT kept all her riders focused.

•	Each of the EFT rounds used during the show was done in less than five minutes, while the riders were mounted. The riders had fun using their tapping skills!

There are several significant takeaways for amateur competition from this example:

•	EFT was taught mechanically, and applied only to executing specific skills

•	We did not work on any emotional issues, and we narrowly defined our desired outcomes: “Keeping Blue on the rail”, or “Improving my two-point”

•	At the show, we kept the rounds short and we kept them fun

•	Their trainer/instructor reinforced this tool, tapping with them or asking me to do so, and encouraging them to tap with each other. This helps give it credibility to the rider, who can then use it openly and with the assistance of teammates as part of her tool-kit

•	Although the riders themselves knew they improved, the results and judge’s comments also provided an objective measure of how the EFT had helped

An added bonus for riders is that horses look for coherence in humans; that is, when biological systems such as brainwaves and heart rhythms become regular and synchronized. This gives a focused and relaxed energy that the horse, a prey animal expert at picking up on energy states, responds to. The horse can then also relax and access its own skills, and the team of horse and rider reinforces one another positively.

Thus, the use of EFT with easily-quantifiable goals and a focus on relaxation and skill-execution helps both horse and rider.

These results can be generalized to any sport or hobby. For amateur competitors, the relaxing and focusing aspects of EFT may be all they need to allow them to access the skills they have practiced at home and accomplish their goals.

A bee's behavior helped one EFT practitioner realize some things she had been holding onto...

Sometimes, the most mundane occurrences in life light up for us and take on a very personal meaning. If that happens, it can be a great opportunity to do EFT on issues that might have escaped our attention otherwise.

For me, it was a bee. The bee had come into my office somehow and now tried to get out – through the closed window. It was buzzing loudly and bumping against the glass over and over again. The buzzes got louder, the bumping (doesn’t that hurt?) got more intense. Of course, I have seen that before, who hasn’t. However, this time it became a “waking dream” for me, this moment of heightened awareness. Since the window is screened, I could not just open it. So I got a little ziplock bag and tried to catch the bee in order to carry it to the balcony and set the insect free. It wasn’t easy. The bee, of course, did not understand that a higher intelligence (at least in these circumstances) was about to save its life and resisted fiercely. Finally I succeeded, and the bee was freed.

This could have been it: my little good deed for the day. But it wasn’t. The behavior of the bee made me feel strangely uncomfortable. Isn’t that what I do often too? Bumping again and again into the same wall, stubbornly doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results (which is the definition of insanity according to Einstein – who should know).

So I decided to write down, rapidly, a little list of areas in my life that resembled the bee’s behavior in some way. I instantly came up with 7 items! Not all of them big, but each of them could use some change of approach.

I picked one issue for doing EFT that had been bothering me for a while. It was my reaction to a friend who recently was diagnosed with an illness (not life threatening) and did not handle it well at all. She lives in another country, and we have frequent and long phone conversations. Since the diagnosis our calls had become very unpleasant for me. Endless wailing and whining (“Why me?”) mixed with resentment and bitterness (“I don’t deserve this!”), and no opening whatsoever for gaining a higher perspective. I had started dreading her calls, clenching my teeth when she was talking and giving rather harsh advice. (Tapping while she was talking did not help.) I was stuck, repeating the same response over and over.

So, after the bee incident and putting this issue on my list, I started tapping.

Even though she is whiny and wimpy and downright enjoys sitting in a black hole, and it drives me crazy, and I really don’t want to talk to her anymore – this is what I feel.

Even though she is a spoiled little girl just crying for attention and has no idea what other people go though with much more serious health issues, and that makes me feel resentful – I accept every part of me.

Even though I fee like an idiot because she just uses me, and I feel dismissed because she does not want to hear what I have to say although I know so much and I could really help her – I am still a wise woman and a good practitioner.

Wow! I had not been aware how deep that went and how angry I was. So I tapped several rounds until the intensity went from an 8 to a 3. I now understood that it really has been shocking to her to be confronted with this, there was physical pain involved, and she did not need me to educate her but just to listen.
Then I called her and asked how she was doing. Well! She was a changed woman. Very calm, reasonable and rational, not a spot of self-pity. She is still not open to tapping or any other self-awareness method, but she never was. (What I love about her is her big, warm heart and her acute sense of humor.)

This proves again that EFT works in mysterious ways – and that we should pay attention to the little things in our lives because they can carry big messages.

P.S. Moving on to the other points on my list…

by Gwyneth Moss
www.emotional-health.co-uk

I’d like to share three very special and moving EFT experiences. People often ask me if they can use EFT to help their pets. So I tell them yes. And because animals don’t always like to be tapped on and because we may not be sure where their tapping points are, it is helpful to use surrogate tapping.

Now, for some of us, especially those who are Reiki trained, the concept of healing at a distance is nothing new. And those with a homeopathy background are accustomed to treating animals. But for me with my scientific upbringing it always seemed a step too far to use EFT at a distance for an animal. And so it was with more than a little uncertainty that I built into my EFT workshops a group exercise to tap as surrogates for an animal. I need not have worried as the results have been little short of astounding.

In each of these three amazing cases a group of 12 tapped together for a pet known only to one of them. The one who knew the pet acted as the pet through role-play (mentally stepped into the pet’s body) and I acted as therapist leading the “pet” through EFT. The others in the group tapped along with us, repeating the words we used and borrowed benefits for themselves as well.

For the set up phrases we used whatever words came to the person speaking for the pet or to me as therapist and then added something about the pet being loved, safe and cared for. Each of these cases took about 15-20 minutes of tapping.

Oscar’s Shaking Tail

In September the group tapped for Oscar. Sue Ashdown was offering a temporary home to Oscar (the cat of a friend of hers) who, due to changing circumstances, was unable to look after him. Sue was worried about Oscar – his tail and whole rear quivered and shook and he stumbled as he walked and sometimes fell. Her three other cats would not eat with him and he was generally in poor condition.

We tapped as a group with Sue leading us and speaking as Oscar:

“Even though my tail shakes, I’m a good cat and Sue and Dawn love me
“Even though I don’t know where I live I’m a good cat and these people care about me…”

Sue was guessing at Oscar’s emotional state and events that had happened to him just came to her. The words “came from nowhere” she said with surprise. After about 15 minutes of tapping, Sue felt a deep sense of calm and we tapped a round of “I am Sue” to separate her energy connection with Oscar.

When Sue got home from the workshop she found that Oscar’s tail was no longer shaking, he was walking better, not falling, the other cats were much more relaxed with him and he with them and they were all eating together. Its now December (3 months later) and Sue confirms that these improvements are sustained.

Kitten the “Scare-dy Cat”

A few weeks later another group of 12 tapped for a middle aged cat who goes by the name of Kitten. Kitten’s owner is a friend of Moira who spoke as Kitten and once again I acted as therapist and the group tapped with us.

Kitten was a “scare-dy cat,” very nervous, startled at any movement and spent most of her time hiding upstairs.	We started tapping with “Even though I’m scared of footsteps I’m a good cat and Moira loves me.” Then I asked Moira if she knew what had happened to Kitten when she was a kitten. Moira didn’t know and so we made up imaginary events: “Even though that man hurt me and I bit him and I couldn’t escape, that was then, this is now, I’m with good people now, I’m safe now,” “Even though footsteps remind me of that man and I’m terrified there are good people around me now and they love me.”

We tapped together as a group for about 15 minutes until Moira felt a sense of deep calm. I asked her to picture Kitten and she pictured her snuggled up all relaxed. When she got home Kitten’s owner said, “I don’t know what’s got into this cat, she’s so much calmer.”

Weeks later Moira confirms that Kitten is much calmer, doesn’t startle at footsteps and spends most of her time downstairs. It is interesting that when she inquired of Kitten’s owner as to Kitten’s early experiences she found out that Kitten had been the runt of the litter and was raised in a chaotic household and her experiences had probably been more of neglect than of cruelty. So even if Moira’s imaginings were off track the tapping did the trick.

Poppy: Destruction and Disruption

The third case is the most moving. Sue Hanisch told us of a tragedy. Her brother and his wife have four young children, four cats and until recently a vibrant and intelligent Border Collie named Shadow who was like a fifth child. One morning in the summer, Shadow was hit by a car and was so badly injured that she had to be put to sleep. The raw and painful grief of the family was such that they believed that no dog could ever replace Shadow.

Then they heard from a neighbor that a Jack Russell 6 month old puppy was to be returned to the rescue centre because his new owners could not handle him. The family felt sorry for the puppy and agreed to take Poppy. Well Poppy proved to be more than a handful and chewed the carpet, terrorized the cats, jumped and barked and was constantly on red alert. Sue told us that this was a turning point for the family, Poppy’s young life had brought hope and if Poppy had to be returned to the rescue centre the children would be inconsolable. However, Poppy’s behavior was causing havoc.

So Sue “became Poppy” and I led the group. We started with the behavior:

“Even though I bark and jump I’m a good dog and they want to love me”

Then we went onto Poppy’s insecurity,

“Even though I’ve been in three homes and I don’t know where I belong and nobody wants me and I have to be noticed, the children love me and want me to stay.”

Then:

“Even though I’m scared I’m not good enough its ok, this family loves me.”

As we tapped, Sue was feeling Poppy’s emotions and feeling some shift but it wasn’t until it came through me to offer, “Even though I can’t be Shadow I can be Poppy and Poppy is Poppy.” At this point it was like an electric shock went through Sue and as we tapped that subsided to a deep calm and she tapped a round of “I am Sue” to de-role herself.

Sue visited her brother a week later. The front door was opened and left open (previously Poppy would have rushed out barking and jumping) as Sue walked into the kitchen she found Poppy curled up in a basket, a quiet little angel. A month later Sue has reported that Poppy has all the natural enthusiasm of any Jack Russel puppy and there is no more destruction and disruption. The cats are now friends with Poppy who in her young fun way is helping the whole family to heal.

Conclusions

So, my conclusion is that if you want to use EFT to help an animal or pet I would suggest that you find at least one other person to tap with you. The one of you that knows the pet can then role-play, tune into the feeling of the pet, or simply speak of what you know happened or imagine what could have happened. If in doubt, guess, pretend or make it up. The other then acts as EFT therapist, asking questions and leading/guiding through the EFT process. Having one of you manage the process frees the other of you to manage the content and to be open to what comes to you without having to think about the words. If you can find other people to tap with you, then that’s even better, though there is no proof, my gut feel is that these three cases were turbo charged by the action of the group. Once you sense the work is done the person speaking as the animal needs to de-role themselves by repeating and tapping with “I am me” and saying their own name.

Happy Tapping, Gwyneth

"Almost as a joke I started tapping on myself whilst she concentrated on navigating the crowded narrow streets. To the amazement of both of us her headache eased to a 6 then a 2 and then she forget it had ever been there."

By Gwyneth Moss
www.emotional-health.co.uk

In Gary Craig’s retirement blog he said there are two things about EFT “What it does and Where it points” and that Surrogate Tapping is leading us to “Where it points.” When I first found EFT, the tapping itself was weird enough for me and the idea that you could tap on your own face and something would change for someone else at a distance was just too woo-woo.

However for the last few years I have been intrigued by experiences and stories of distant work. My first experience was when a passenger in heavy rush hour traffic in the centre of Manchester and my friend Masha who was driving complained of a 10/10 headache like a vice. Almost as a joke I started tapping on myself whilst she concentrated on navigating the crowded narrow streets. To the amazement of both of us her headache eased to a 6 then a 2 and then she forget it had ever been there.

Later I designed a group exercise to teach EFT Practitioners how to work with groups and deliver the borrowing benefits instructions. To illustrate that it does not matter who we borrow benefits from or how unrelated their problem, I had a member of the group role play their pet whist we all tapped along. My expectation that anything would change for the pet was close to zero. However if you read Two Cats and a Puppy, you can read the full story of Oscar the cat and how the tremor in his tail disappeared.

These tapping circles with animal role play continued and a succession of animals changed their behaviour. From this and with my colleague Heather Smiles who does marvelous work tapping for horses, we developed a three stage protocol for surrogate tapping using animals as our teachers. The three stages we call “talk about,” “talk to,” and “talk as.”

The three stages are designed to get you out of the way and gently increase the connection to the other’s energy. Here I’d simply like to share some of our learnings:

1. Get yourself out of the way. Work first on your own stuff about wanting or needing change in the other. You have to simply get out of the way and let healing flow through you. This is not about your agenda. You are not out to “fix” someone. You are simply offering healing that they can accept or not. Think of it as a means of loosening an energetic stuckness around the person. Be unattached to the outcome. When that stuck energy starts to move the change will be how they choose to use that for themselves. It may not be the outcome you desire.

2. Allow the words to come to you in a stream of consciousness. Don’t think about it or analyze. What comes may surprise you or be unexpected, that’s ok and if you feel like you are making it up then that is ok too. Let yourself pretend.

3. Do not lead or use positive suggestion or over optimistic reframes. Stick to simple EFT, being specific and cleaning up all aspects. With animals the times it has not worked is when there has been direct suggestion of change – leading. Try to find or imagine earlier events, in what context would this behavior or emotion make sense.

4. Start by telling the story, the facts and the feelings about the other, talk in the third person as you tap on yourself. That may lead you to having an imaginary dialogue as you talk to them, allow some silences for the responses and again let yourself pretend or make it up. And keep tapping.

5. Don’t go to the first person “talk as” tapping unless you intuitively feel an open door, an energetic permission. Trust your intuition. And don’t worry if that door feels closed just continue with the “talk about” and “talk to” tapping, that is often sufficient. If you efforts are perceived as unwanted or you are working to your own agenda at best you will get nowhere at worst you may get an energetic kick back.

6. Be relaxed and don’t go looking for changes after your tapping to “prove” that it worked. Sometimes the change may be something other that that which you directly tapped for.

7. Find someone to partner you. It’s a good idea to do surrogate tapping together with a partner and this is how we teach it in the workshops. One of you manages the content by telling the story or role playing. The other of you manages the EFT process by asking simple questions, identifying aspects, testing and keeping the flow going.

"I focused on her... and opened my intention to learn why new food upset her stomach... I felt information come to me as I began to tap."

by Arinda Davis

Recently I was at the grocery store buying cat food when I realized that they didn’t carry the flavor I had been buying any more. This is no big deal for most cat owners, but I have a cat that throws up a lot more than most, and she does it most often if I change her dry food. Dilemma. Chase all over town hunting down the food she’s used to? Buy something different and stock up on paper towels and sponges? Or get the new food and try EFT? I’ve done surrogate EFT with her before with some success, but it’s harder for me to do surrogate EFT with animals than with humans. I decided to try it.

When I got home, I settled myself where I could be undisturbed for awhile and tuned in to her. This is a challenge for me right now because I’m empathic and haven’t learned how to keep my boundaries drawn in all situations yet. I set the intention to open myself to learning about her physiology without taking on her energy, then I visualized my energy field. I focused on her and saw her field next to mine then opened my intention to learn why new food upset her stomach. I could see the two fields next to each other but not touching. I felt information come to me as I began to tap. I didn’t use a set up statement; I just began saying what came to mind:

This new food tastes good
But it upsets my stomach
I like it
But I can’t eat it
I want to eat it
But I know it’ll upset my stomach
My stomach doesn’t like this
My stomach thinks this isn’t good

At this point, I understood that she must feel a gritty, grainy upset in her stomach whenever I changed her dry food. It takes her stomach several days to adjust and it doesn’t like it at all. It throws her off balance in some way.

This gritty upset
This grainy upset
My stomach thinks this is bad for me
My stomach doesn’t know that this is just food
It’s just cat food
It tastes good and it’s good for me

I felt the tide start to turn and her stomach begin to accept the fact that there was going to be new food and that it was okay. It was like her stomach realized that this wasn’t a foreign invader and it didn’t have to reject it.

This new food is good
This new food is good for me
It’s okay to eat it
I can let it stay

It only took a few minutes before I felt that we were done. Later that day, I mixed the new food in with what I had left of the old (a process that I made sure to do over the course of a week or more previously, but only had enough old food to mix in for one night this time), and sat back to see what happened. Nothing happened. She ate it, went outside, came back in, sat around, fell asleep, and never threw up. I’m sure she’s more comfortable now, and my carpet cleaner is getting a rest. What an amazing tool, and how fortunate we are to know how to use it.

by Susie Land
www.TapForCats.com
The Southern Tier, New York, USA

I’ve been tapping for about 6 years for myself and a bit for friends and family-mostly everyone thinks I’m loopy, so I tend to keep it to myself – EFT, I mean.

I have had some neat things happen while tapping for my and my mom’s cats, whom I know quite well. What really excited me was this past Friday I tapped for the neighbor’s beagle puppy, Brownie, whom I barely know…

It was about 11 at night. Brownie’s family lives in the house next door, and they were out. Brownie was locked in his crate, with the window open near him, so I could easily hear what he was doing.

We got a thunderstorm, very intense, so much so that later people said it knocked pictures off walls and dishes out of cupboards.

This little beagle had never heard thunder before and since he was alone, he got very worked up, yipping, whining, crying, throwing himself against the inside of his crate, it was pitiful to listen to….I felt so bad for him. And I felt for my husband, who was trying to sleep as he had to get up early.

After listening to the poor thing for about 10 minutes as he got even more hyper, it dawned on me to try tapping for him.

Aha! I was awed at the things that came up – his terror, being trapped, his anger at his family for leaving him, fear of being beaten for soiling his crate out, his pain from that loud noise hurting his ears and more….Wow! (I’m not a dog person…I love animals, but cats are my ‘thing’ – this was really blowing me away! – Sorry, I can’t think of another way to describe it)

Anyway, I tapped for each issue as it came up as if I were Brownie, it took less than 10 minutes total, and I got the feeling Brownie got calm and sure enough, suddenly his whimpering and crying stopped. And even tho’ the storm continued for another half hour, he never made another peep (I wondered if he had died….of course not, the had EFT worked).

Next morning my husband even mentioned that he noticed Brownie suddenly shut up…I told him what I had done and he gave me the “look”….ha ha ha.

One thing I might add, when I was finished, I spent another minute breaking the energy connection between Brownie and me. I pictured a cord between us falling away and I said “I am Susie-Brownie is Brownie” And a few similar type things. I don’t remember where I read it, but when I do surrogate tapping, I always break the connection when I’m finished.

Sorry to be so long winded but this experience really amazed me. Even after tapping for years, I’m still awed at what it accomplishes. And I’m not professional, just an avid user.

Thank you for spreading the word. Hey, also thank Betty and Jade for demonstrating the Inner Theater technique. I felt like I had come home when I tried it first time and now I use it all the time. I love it, it works for me when I can’t get anywhere with regular tapping… so I usually go straight for Inner Theater exclusively on myself. I mean, that’s my favorite EFT method when I need to work something out. For me.

Thanks again,
Susie

Update:

Funny thing about Brownie, we had another thunder storm roll through yesterday and Brownie was again home alone in his crate. He never made a peep. So it looks like he’ll be OK with thunder, as long as he doesn’t have some other mitigating experience with it. I love it – being able to help like that…

Northern Illinois (NW of Chicago), USA

I am an energetic practitioner for animals and I teach classes in animal communication and energy healing. Here is a story about Drago the Stallion. We brought our students to a stable where we were given permission to work on several horses. Dividing the students among the horses, I was observing one group who were not having any success connecting to the horse.

Their efforts to connect with him to ask permission resulted in his turning away from them and ignoring them. I thought what a perfect opportunity to show how EFT can also be a tool for communicating and healing.

I began to tap on myself as a surrogate for Drago, saying:

Even though no one takes time to understand me and what I am feeling, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

After the second time saying that phrase, Drago whipped his head around and began nodding yes. I continued to tap and communicate what it was the students wanted to offer him to heal his emotional wounds.

Even though I don’t know these people and I am afraid of strangers, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though they say they want to help me, and I am afraid, I choose to trust them.

Even though I feel these emotions that are so foreign to me, I choose to be open to these humans. I choose to trust…

Then I used words of trust, love, respect, honor on all the end points, tapping on myself.

After three minutes or so of tapping, he then stepped forward and began accepting the students’ Reiki energy. He then proceeded to let the students stroke him. The barn staff was amazed as he was known as the wild crazy one, who had almost bit off the stablehand’s finger.

The owner was so impressed with the results, she asked if the students would continue working on him. I taught the students to tap for him while employing Reiki energy. For those familiar with Reiki, they would visualize the symbols entering the areas where they tapped.

After four sessions, the horse was a different animal. We also instructed the staff not to call him names, because that hurt his feelings, and he felt he would live up to all the nasty names he was called. So we tapped that if anyone called him a nasty name, he would look at them and then ignore them for he now knew his self-worth.

We communicated to the horse through EFT, tapping while sending our thoughts and mental images to him. We let him know that, whenever he felt agitated, he might imagine someone tapping on him. We sent him our intention that when he began to feel uneasy, he was to remember us tapping and know that the anxiety would ease up.

Today he is a beautiful stallion that is magnificent in the ring.

www.eft-liberation.com
Strasbourg, France

This article is available in Spanish. Go to the Spanish translation.

This happened to me at a time when I had been studying EFT for a few years but had been having difficulties convincing the very skeptical French people and I was about to give up the whole idea of being an EFT practitioner. Since then, thankfully, the French are getting rapidly more open to and less wary of techniques like EFT!

This experience with Elaine, my friend’s cat, gave me a reason to pursue my goal, so that’s why I call it Elaine’s gift. At the end of this story you will see that I wasn’t the only one to receive a gift!

I had an appointment to go to a friend Susan’s for tea one day.

When I got there Susan told me that Elaine, their cat was dying and was probably in her last hours. Her husband John was home from work as Elaine had had a fit that morning. She couldn’t breathe as she had cancer that had invaded most of her body (I saw the x rays – quite impressive). They had rushed her off to the vet that morning to have her put to sleep but she had put up such a fuss at going in the car that it had really livened her up, so when the vet agreed upon euthanasia they didn’t have the heart to put her to sleep and they brought her back home.

John and Susan were smiling and friendly but I could sense their tension and grief. They told me they were worried they had acted out of selfishness and they couldn’t tell whether she was in intolerable pain or whether it was the right time to put her to sleep and they were in total confusion.

I automatically thought of EFT but hesitated as I had already touched on the subject at an earlier date and hadn’t really found an opening. But this time I thought, “What the heck, this is a crisis, let’s give it a go!” So I told them I’d been working with this energy tapping thing called EFT and that I had just read an article about that explained how it could work on animals too.

So Susan said “O.K, why not have a go?”

I told her I wouldn’t have to touch Elaine or even see her. She hadn’t been to her favourite place the couch in the sitting room for over a week staying mainly on a cushion under the radiator as she was always cold.
But for two days she had been staying in hiding under the bed behind some boxes. Susan would crouch by the bed and coo at her to comfort her but she seemed to need to be alone. Susan said that it reminded her of when animals know they are going to die.

So, we went to the little sitting room just across the hall from the bedroom I sat down on the couch and I asked Susan to help me make a list of the things Elaine would be feeling (all the pains, discomforts, fears, tensions and emotions). I explained to her that I was going to imagine I was Elaine and that I would then tap on myself for what she could be feeling.

So Susan told me all the things Elaine could be feeling as well as the fact that she hated going in the car and that she really hated having to swallow the pills the vet had prescribed. I also suggested things that would concern John and Susan such as:

Even though “Mummy” and “Daddy” are afraid I’m in pain…
Even though are finding it difficult to let go of me…
Even though they are very sad I’m dying …
Even though they don’t know whether to put me to sleep or not…

…I’m a good cat and Mummy and Daddy love me very much.

While we were writing out this list, Frieda, their other cat came up and kept on meowing and rubbing herself on us wanting attention. She had never come up to me in my previous visits as she likes to stay on her own, but today she was extremely sociable!

When we had finished our list I started to really focus my attention on Elaine and seeing some pictures of cats on the wall, I thought that maybe I could focus on one of the to help me connect further while tapping surrogately. I asked Susan, “Is that one of Elaine?

I had barely finished my sentence when Elaine walked in and lay down at my feet, almost lying on them, as if to say, “O.K. lady, I’m ready, do your stuff!”

Susan and I were both in awe as we had never seen a dying cat go up to a stranger before, let alone lie down at that stranger’s feet!

I immediately started tapping on myself or just simply gently touching the EFT points, going through each item of the list. The atmosphere in the room grew more and more peaceful as I tapped. Susan sat down next to Elaine and stroked her gently and lovingly during the whole procedure. She was really participating fully and smiling gently all the while. All the sadness and distress she had shown previously had disappeared.

When I tapped on Elaine not liking the pills I felt a gripping sensation in my throat and chest so I tapped for, “I really hate those pills!” and “they hurt my throat and chest,” until it went away.

At first, Frieda lay watching the situation on the armrest next to me and at one point she sat up and stared intently at my face for the longest time even when I wasn’t tapping my face. After she kept rubbing against me and Susan demanding cuddles and meowing and she ended up lying in my lap as I continued on tapping.

During the procedure, Elaine looked up at me from time to time. When I had finished tapping I said to Susan, “O.K. we’re done now.” Right at that moment Elaine got up and stretched and went to climb up on the couch next to me, but she couldn’t as she was too weak, so Susan picked her up and placed her next to me. She curled up and fell asleep peacefully.

Finally we left her there to sleep and went to the kitchen for a cup of tea. The atmosphere was much more peaceful and even John, who hadn’t participated as he had work to do, was more relaxed. We chatted and even had a few good laughs!

Before I left we went in to check on Elaine. She was still lying quietly on the couch and her breathing was much more relaxed (John, the skeptic, was the one who pointed this out!).

The next day, Elaine had had another fit so Susan and John once more decided to take her to the vet, but this time they were decided that it was really time to put her to sleep. But they never had to make the decision whether to do so or not because this time Elaine died peacefully in Susan’s arms in the car on their way to the vet’s.

My deepest thanks to Elaine.

Whenever I feel discouraged I can feel her encouraging me to continue.
